Overview

In recent years, the evolution of generative AI has significantly impacted artistic and creative practices. While AI has the potential to expand creativity and push beyond existing boundaries, it also raises concerns about cultural biases and ethical issues. This symposium, centered around the theme of “RESPECT,” aims to explore the ethical challenges, cultural boundaries, and innovative aspects of AI in relation to creativity from diverse perspectives.

Purpose

This symposium is part of the collaborative research project “Evaluation of Aesthetics and Art in AI-Generated Works,” supported by Osaka Metropolitan University RESPECT Collaborative Research Grant. Our research team consists of scholars specializing in contemporary art, literature, everyday aesthetics, and fashion design, aiming to systematically examine the relationship between AI-generated works and human perception from an interdisciplinary perspective.

AI research will increasingly require not only technical perspectives from the sciences and engineering but also approaches from the humanities, including culture, the arts, and ethics. We hope that this symposium will serve as an opportunity to open new doors for AI research from the standpoint of the humanities.

About the Venue

The symposium will be held in two locations: Tokyo and Osaka. While the overall theme remains the same, each event will feature slightly different approaches to the discussion. The Tokyo symposium will focus on an aesthetic and art-theoretical perspective under the sub-theme “How Can AI Transcend the Boundaries of Art?” In contrast, the Osaka symposium will center on cultural and social perspectives, with the sub-theme “How Can AI Transcend the Boundaries of Culture?” We invite you to attend the session that best suits your interests and availability.

This page provides information about the Osaka symposium. For details on the Tokyo symposium, please click here.

Language Policy

While English is typically the default language for international symposia, in regions where English is not the primary language, linguistic barriers can often hinder active discussion and participation. This symposium aims to create an inclusive environment where both speakers and participants can communicate freely in their preferred language—such as Japanese or English—through the use of AI-powered real-time translation subtitles and, when necessary, live interpretation. In this sense, the symposium also serves as a practical experiment in transcending cultural and linguistic boundaries through the use of AI technology.

Feel free to join us without worrying about language barriers.
